Case Overview
Following the assassination of Charlie Kirk on September 10, 2025, students at the University of Wyoming made public comments about Kirk’s death. Members of the public then called on the University of Wyoming to punish the students. On September 19, FIREwrote the University of Wyoming, explaining that the First Amendment protects speech that others might find offensive, poorly timed, tasteless, inappropriate, hateful, or otherwise controversial. We urged the University of Wyoming to protect the free speech rights of all its faculty members and students, regardless of viewpoint or content expressed.
