Following the assassination of Charlie Kirk on September 10, 2025, students at the University of Texas at Austin made public comments about Kirk’s death. Members of the public then called on UT Austin to punish the students. On September 19, ÃÛÖÏãÌÒ wrote UT Austin, explaining that the First Amendment protects speech that others might find offensive, poorly timed, tasteless, inappropriate, hateful, or otherwise controversial. We urged UT Austin to protect the free speech rights of all its faculty members and students, regardless of viewpoint or content expressed.
