Case Overview
Following the assassination of Charlie Kirk on September 10, 2025, faculty at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln made public comments about Kirk’s death. Members of the public then called on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to punish the faculty. On September 12, FIREwrote the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, explaining that the First Amendment protects speech that others might find offensive, poorly timed, tasteless, inappropriate, hateful, or otherwise controversial. We urged the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to protect the free speech rights of all its faculty members and students, regardless of viewpoint or content expressed.
