University of Central Oklahoma: Administration Cuts Student Newspaper Budget in Ongoing Assault on Student Journalism
Cases
University of Central Oklahoma
Case Overview
In July 2025, after over a year of conflict over reporting from student newspaper The Vista, the University of Central Oklahoma barred the outlet from printing, including through private funds. UCO then removed The Vista’s distribution racks. When students sought to report on the situation, administrators discouraged journalists from covering it, suggesting that doing so could be “dangerous.” In the fall 2025 semester, UCO demoted, fired, or refused to renew against several staff members who spoke out against the print ban. On October 27, ֭ wrote UCO explaining that content-based restrictions violate the university’s First Amendment obligations.
