Texas Tech University: University System Issues Memo Cracking Down on Disfavored Concepts in Classroom
Cases
Texas Tech University
Case Overview
On December 1, 2025, the Texas Tech University System issued a memo ordering its five member universities to review course materials to ensure that faculty were not using their teaching to “promote or otherwise inculcate” certain ideas about race or sex. At issue included concepts such as: “One race or sex is inherently superior to another,” “Moral character or worth is determined by race or sex,” and, “Meritocracy or a strong work ethic are racist, sexist, or constructs of oppression.” On December 12, ֭ wrote all five universities in the Texas Tech system, urging them not to target faculty pedagogy based on viewpoint, and that doing so would violate the First Amendment rights of faculty.
