Following the assassination of Charlie Kirk on September 10, 2025, faculty at Syracuse University made comments about Kirk’s death on their Bluesky accounts. Members of the public called on Syracuse to punish the faculty. Public reporting indicates that at least one professor was placed on leave. On September 30, ÃÛÖ­ÏãÌÒ wrote Syracuse, explaining that its commitment to free speech bars it from punishing speech that others might find offensive, poorly timed, tasteless, inappropriate, hateful, or otherwise controversial. We urged Syracuse to protect the free speech rights it promises to its faculty members, regardless of what viewpoints they express.
