Cases
Susquehanna University
Case Overview
Following the assassination of Charlie Kirk on September 10, 2025, faculty and students at Susquehanna University made public comments about Kirk’s death. Members of the public then called on the university to punish the faculty and students. On September 19, FIREwrote Susquehanna University, explaining that the First Amendment protects speech that others might find offensive, poorly timed, tasteless, inappropriate, hateful, or otherwise controversial. We urged the university to protect the free speech rights of all its faculty members and students, regardless of viewpoint or content expressed. On September 19, Susquehanna University President Jonathan Green affirmed that the school would protect the expressive rights of its faculty and students, and that no faculty or students would be investigated or punished for lawful speech.
