Southeastern Louisiana University: University Censors Professor’s Off-Campus Criticism, Political Commentary
Cases
Southeastern Louisiana University
Case Overview
On August 21, 2024, Southeastern Louisiana University warned Professor of Library Science and Head of Reference Dayne Sherman that his extramural commentary on issues such as crime and racism, and his criticism of Governor Jeff Landry’s policies, violated university media policies. Sherman feared that continuing to speak publicly on his personal social media and local talk radio show would result in university sanctions. SLU continued to periodically remind Sherman to adhere to its media policies, stifling Sherman’s speech for nearly a year. On August 14, 2025, ÃÛÖÏãÌÒ wrote to SLU explaining that the First Amendment protects Sherman’s speech as a private citizen on matters of public concern. We demanded that the university clear Sherman’s record of this matter and cease suppressing his speech.
