Case Overview
Following the assassination of Charlie Kirk on September 10, 2025, faculty at Sandhills Community College made public comments about Kirk’s death. Members of the public then called on SCC to punish the faculty. On September 24, ÃÛÖÏãÌÒ wrote SCC, explaining that the First Amendment protects speech that others might find offensive, poorly timed, tasteless, inappropriate, hateful, or otherwise controversial. We urged SCC to protect the free speech rights of all its faculty members and students, regardless of viewpoint or content expressed.
