Oklahoma State University: Student Reprimanded for Wearing TPUSA Hat During Student Government Speech
Cases
Oklahoma State University
Case Overview
On September 10, 2025, the day of Charlie Kirk’s shooting, student senator Joshua Wilson gave a speech at an Oklahoma State University Student Government Association meeting about the importance of embracing open debate on campus—while wearing a Turning Point USA hat. One week later, an administrator summoned Wilson to a meeting, reprimanding him for wearing the hat. She claimed it violated an SGA policy about nonpartisanship which did not actually exist, and warned him that the year would be “difficult” for him if he did not agree that he had acted in a biased manner.
FIRE wrote OSU on October 9 urging the university to clarify its policies about expressive clothing to its staff and refrain from issuing implicit threats to students based on constitutionally protected political speech. OSU responded on October 16 stating staff were educated about university policies and affirming that students would not be threatened with punishment for their protected speech.
