Case Overview

Following the assassination of Charlie Kirk on September 10, 2025, students at Missouri State University made public comments about Kirk’s death. Members of the public then called on Missouri State University to punish the students. On September 19, ��֭�� wrote Missouri State University, explaining that the First Amendment protects speech that others might find offensive, poorly timed, tasteless, inappropriate, hateful, or otherwise controversial. We urged Missouri State University to protect the free speech rights of all its faculty members and students, regardless of viewpoint or content expressed.
