Case Overview

Administrators fired Indiana Daily Student media director Jim Rodenbush on October 14, 2025, after he refused to censor the newspaper as directed by IU Media School administrators. According to an email obtained by , IU Media School instructed the paper to publish“nothing but information about homecoming — no other news at all, and particularly no traditional front page news coverage[.]” On October 15, IU barred IDS entirely from producing print editions — an unconstitutional prior restraint and egregious encroachment on IDS’s editorial independence. ֭’s Student Press Freedom Initiative wrote to IU on October 16, insisting that it cease its efforts to control IDS’s content, offer Rodenbush reinstatement, and rescind its order to the paper to cease printing.
