Case Overview

Following the assassination of Charlie Kirk on September 10, 2025, faculty at Clemson University made public comments about Kirk’s death. Members of the public then called on Clemson University to punish the faculty. On September 12, FIREwrote Clemson University, explaining that the First Amendment protects speech that others might find offensive, poorly timed, tasteless, inappropriate, hateful, or otherwise controversial. We urged Clemson University to protect the free speech rights of all its faculty members and students, regardless of viewpoint or content expressed.
