Outspoken: Music for Free Speech

  • Date:
  • Location:

Rochester, NY: Public Event at The Hochstein School Performance Hall

FIRE proudly presents its first-ever classical music concert in support of free expression. At the podium is conductor Rebecca Bryant Novak, whose expulsion from the University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music followed her outspoken writing about the mishandling of her sexual harassment complaint. (You can read more about Rebecca’s story ). By replatforming Rebecca on the conductor’s podium, FIREaffirms its commitment to protecting the voices of those who dare to speak — and create — freely.

The evening will feature internationally acclaimed violinist Lara St. John, praised by The New York Times as “a high-powered soloist.” The repertoire includes works by composers who themselves faced censorship, such as Dmitri Shostakovich, illuminating the timeless connection between civil liberties and artistic expression. Between performances, hear from FIREstaff and others about the essential role free expression plays in the lives of artists and audiences alike.

This event is free and open to the public. to reserve your spot.
