Whetstone High School: FIREbanned from speaking with the press about controversial bathroom policies
Cases
Case Overview
In late 2024 and early 2025, Columbus City Schools in Ohio received critical local press coverage for its bathroom policies. After schools limited student access in an effort to crack down on vaping and fighting in the bathrooms, students complained to local press about long lines, filthy facilities, UTIs, female students menstruating through their clothes, and students calling parents to pick them up and bring them to local public restrooms. Local media reported that Whetstone High School reprimanded a student for speaking to the press and that administrators told students they were not permitted to do so.
On June 25, FIREwrote Whetstone High School explaining that any such ban on students speaking with the press about school matters of public concern is unconstitutional.
