CU Boulder: Student Journalist Suspended for Covering Protest
Cases
University of Colorado, Boulder
Case Overview
On October 16, 2025, student journalist AÅ¡iihkionkonci Parker documented protesters interlocking arms and chanting at a CU Boulder career fair. The following day, Parker was suspended by the university for taking photos and videos of the protesters, rendering him unable to attend classes, events, or enter campus residential buildings. ÃÛÖÏãÌÒ’s Student Press Freedom Initiative sent a letter to CU Boulder on October 21, urging the university to end Parker’s suspension and stop further attempts to punish the press for legitimate newsgathering activities. CU Boulder responded on October 23, stating student journalists are encouraged to tell the Office of Strategic Relations and Communications of their coverage, and university policy bars taking photos or videos at the University Memorial Center without approval. On October 31, CU Boulder changed Parker’s suspension to an exclusion, which bars Parker from being on campus when not in class and limits their ability to gather news. FIREwrote back on November 3, demanding CU Boulder live up to its commitment to a free student press, end the disciplinary action taken against Parker, and not punish any other student journalists who film or take photos in the University Memorial Center.
